Dumb question, right? Of course they won’t. How can you make sure that your kids will get what is rightfully theirs, when the time is right? Only by planning in advance. Your spouse’s next husband or wife might be perfect, but chances are they aren’t. Why take that chance? If you want to protect your children from your spouse's next mate, ask about a Children's Trust. A Children's Trust protects assets for the children from evil step-moms and evil step-dads. It also protects the children's inheritance from bankruptcy, lawsuits and IRS liens. Why risk their inheritance? You don't have to, you know!
Great post. I know first had that step parents while nice aren't the same thing as your real parents. I'm so glad my father had a will to protect my sisters and I.
